Ash

Welcome to Ash Class

Myself and My Changing World

Our theme throughout the school to begin the school year is ‘Myself and My Changing World’. As part of this, Ash Class will be looking at the effect that the Roman invasion of Britain had upon our local area. During the topic we will be developing our skills and knowledge across a range of subjects as we learn lots about the Roman invaders. This will include investigating the diet of Romans and Celts, finding out more about the positive and negative impact of the Romans on Britain and making Roman battle helmets! All of our English work in class will directly relate to our topic work. This term we will be studying and writing our own Roman myths and legends stories, writing recipes to make authentic Roman and Celtic meals as well as debating 'What did the Romans do for us?' In RE, we will be learning about Hinduism and beliefs that Hindu people hold. In Maths, we will continue to consolidate our understanding of place value, addition and subtraction, before moving on to looking at statistics. We will also continue to develop our skills in reasoning and problem solving.

General information about Ash Class

The Ash class teachers are Mr Paynter and Mrs Elliot. Mrs Elliot teaches the class on Mondays and Tuesdays and Mr Paynter teaches from Wednesday to Friday. We also have other adults working in class to support the children throughout the week.

If you have any queries or concerns, please come and see us at parent's evening or book a date with Mrs Scaysbrook in the office to meet with us after school.

English & Maths

English lessons link to our topics, following the National Curriculum for English. In Year 5, this includes writing for different purposes, using a range of punctuation correctly, as well as continuing to spell using the patterns we have learned.

In Maths, as a school, we adopt a 'mastery' approach. This means we teach the objectives of the National Curriculum in small steps, ensuring that the children have a really secure grasp of each concept before we move on to the next one. There are also lots of opportunities to develop reasoning and problem solving skills.

Swimming & PE

This term Ash class will go swimming on Friday and have PE on Thursday. Please ensure that a swimming kit is brought to school each week and that a PE kit is in school at all times.

Homework

Ash class are given a list of suggested homework activities linked to their topic at the start of each term, which can be completed throughout the term. They are also expected to practice their spelling regularly. Occasionally the children will also be given a piece of maths homework. However, please ensure that you continue to support your child's reading as much as possible!

Thank you for all your support.

Kind regards,

Mr Paynter and Mrs Elliot
