Welcome to Ash Class

Our theme and 'big question' this term are:

Living & Growing

How does our environment shape our personality?

Our theme throughout the school this term is ‘Living & Growing’. As part of this, Ash Class will be considering our 'big question' of 'How does our environment shape our personality?'

Our first topic this term is 'Galleries' and we will be exploring the work and artistic styles of different famous artists from the 19th and 20th centuries.

This will include looking at the life and work of Van Gogh and Picasso, as well as making our own surrealist animations in the style of Dali! We also hope to be visited by local illustrator and artist Patrick Cannon, who will do a workshop with the children.

All of our English work in class will directly relate to our topic work. This term we will be writing our own poems inspired by the work of TS Eliot; looking at the work of the author and illustrator Michael Foreman; as well as researching and writing our own biographies of famous artists.

We will continue to update this page throughout the topic.

General information about Ash Class

The Ash class teachers are Mr Paynter and Mrs Elliot. Mrs Elliot teaches the class on Mondays and Tuesdays and Mr Paynter teaches from Wednesday to Friday. We also have other adults working in class to support the children throughout the week.

If you have any queries or concerns, please come and see us at parent's evening or book a date with Mrs Scaysbrook in the office to meet with us after school.

English & Maths

English lessons link to our topics, following the National Curriculum for English. In Year 5, this includes writing for different purposes, using a range of punctuation correctly, as well as continuing to spell using the patterns we have learned.

In Maths, as a school, we adopt a 'mastery' approach. This means we teach the objectives of the National Curriculum in small steps, ensuring that the children have a really secure grasp of each concept before we move on to the next one. There are also lots of opportunities to develop reasoning and problem solving skills.

This term Ash class  have PE on Tuesday and Thursday. Please ensure that a  PE kit is in school at all times.

Ash class are given a list of suggested homework activities linked to their topic at the start of each term, which can be completed throughout the term. They are also expected to practice their spelling regularly. Occasionally the children will also be given a piece of maths homework. However, please ensure that you continue to support your child's reading as much as possible!

Thank you for all your support.

Kind regards,

Mr Paynter and Mrs Elliot
