Welcome to Sycamore Class!

Our topic this term is 'Towers, Tunnels and Turrets'. We will be developing our skills and knowledge across a range of subjects as we learn lots about castles. This will include a visit to Oxford Castle, making information books, composing castle music and designing and making our own model castles. We will also write recounts and fairly tales in English and in RE, we will be learning about Jewish Passover. In maths, we will be consolidating our understanding of place value, addition and subtraction, as well as developing our skills in reasoning and problem solving.

General information about Sycamore Class

The Sycamore class teachers are Dr Paynter and Mrs Drabble. Mrs Drabble teaches the class on Mondays and Tuesdays and Dr Paynter teaches from Wednesday to Friday. Dr Paynter is taking some parental leave this term so the class will be taught by Miss Williams on his usual days. We also have other adults working in class to support the children throughout the week.

If you have any queries or concerns, please come and see us at parent's evening or book a date with Mrs Scaysbrook in the office to meet with us after school.

English & Maths

English lessons link to our topics, following the National Curriculum for English. In Year 2, this includes writing for different purposes, using a range of simple punctuation correctly, as well as continuing to spell using the patterns we have learnt and forming letters the correct size in relation to one another.

In maths, as a school, we are now adopting the 'mastery' approach. This
means we teach the objectives of the National Curriculum in small steps, ensuring that the children have a really secure grasp of each concept before we move on to the next one. There are also lots of opportunities to develop reasoning and problem solving skills.

PE

This term Sycamore class have their PE sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please ensure that a PE kit is in school at all times.

Homework

Sycamore class are given a list of suggested homework activities linked to their topic at the start of each term, which can be completed throughout the term. Occasionally the children will also be given a piece of maths homework. However, please ensure that you continue to support your child's reading as much as possible!

Spelling
The children work daily on spelling patterns in school. We send home a list of words each Wednesday for you to practise at home in time for our weekly test on Monday.

Thank you for all your support.

Kind regards,

Dr Paynter and Mrs Drabble
